Aflatoxins are a family of toxins produced by certain molds that are found on agricultural crops such as maize (corn), peanuts, cottonseed, and tree nuts. Aflatoxins can cause human cancers, if people accidently intake contaminated plant products or consume meat or dairy products from animals that ate contaminated feed. Aflatoxins have been classified as group 1 absolute carcinogens (IARC, 2012) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). If mammals accidentally intake aflatoxin contaminated feed, their milk will contain its secondary metabolite aflatoxin M1 which in turn will affect animal and human health.
